First Responder Peer Mentorship Program

About the Peer Mentorship Program

In partnership with the Culturally-Based Connections for Community Resilience (CCCR) program, Hoʻohanu offers a culturally grounded approach to suicide prevention that honors the unique experiences of Hawaiʻi's first responder communities. Rooted in the values of pilina (meaningful connection), kuleana (shared responsibility), and aloha (compassion and care), the program cultivates a culture where first responders support one another with empathy, trust, and understanding.

Through peer mentorship, cultural practices, and evidence-informed mental health training, participants build the confidence, language, and practical skills to recognize signs of distress, engage in courageous conversations, and connect colleagues with appropriate support. By strengthening relationships and reinforcing the belief that no one should carry their burdens alone, the program helps reduce stigma, foster resilience, and promote collective well-being across Hawaiʻi's first responder community.

At its heart, this program recognizes that healing happens through connection. By investing in one another and embracing the strength of community, first responders are empowered to care for themselves, support their peers, and continue serving Hawaiʻi with resilience, purpose, and aloha.
