Ho'ohanu is a non-profit organization committed to caring for first responder mental health and wellness. We help them learn to manage the stress in their lives to maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle.
Hoʻohanu was founded to initially support EMS paramedic students to manage their stress through healthy experiences in the loʻi kalo (taro farm), the kai (ocean), and lomi lomi (Hawaiian massage). We wanted to offer an alternative way to cope and manage the stress that comes with the job. Too many responders look towards alcohol and other harmful substances/behaviors to attempt to restore balance in their lives.
Hawaiians have always had a symbiotic relationship with Papa Ka Hōnua (Mother Nature) and partnered with her as a healing force. Hoʻohanu is reintroducing her back into the mainstream through Hawaiian cultural practices to heal and maintain wellness.
We offer culturally-based programs, peer support groups, education in areas such as resiliency and wellness, and assist responders to access the most appropriate professional help.
